Today in Melbourne, posters with the slogan “STOP THE FAGS” next to a litany of homophobic canards were being distributed. The claims made on the poster are questionable, have not been peer reviewed, and ignore reality.
So are 91% of children raised by same-sex couples being abused?
Assuming this is referring to children being abused by their parents:
The article that the poster references, authored by Paul Sullins, has never been peer-reviewed and was published in a questionable journal. The journal in question only requires payment and does not require vetting. Anyone, even me – teenager sitting on my couch editing a high-school level essay about Israeli-Palestinian relations, could simply write an academic-style article with “big words” in it, publish it and claim to be a published academic.
Dr Gregory Herek, “an internationally recognized authority on sexual minority issues, including stigma, prejudice and violence based on sexual orientation”, had this to say about the connection between sexual orientation and child sex abuse:
The empirical research does not show that gay or bisexual men are any more likely than heterosexual men to molest children. This is not to argue that homosexual and bisexual men never molest children. But there is no scientific basis for asserting that they are more likely than heterosexual men to do so. (emphasis added).
So why are 51% of LGBT+ children depressed?
(Spoiler alert, it’s not their parents)
It’s because groups like the ACL and the Marriage Alliance keep portraying teh gays as inherently evil, encouraging Christians to harass them to no end. They call them Nazis. They create an environment which normalises hate speech towards LGBT+ people and their allies. They encourage them to repent, which because homosexuality is a natural expression and not a lifestyle choice is not possible. Worse, they do so in the name of God.
In the Gospels (the only part of the New Testament that should matter because – according to the epistles – Jesus is the new law, not his disciples), Jesus never directly condemns homosexuality. He does, however, tell his followers that they must love everyone as he loved them and as God (and thus Jesus) is omnibenevolent, this means Christians must love everyone unconditionally. (That, by the way, was a literal retelling of John 13:34).
The ACL and similar hate groups’ choice to ignore Jesus’ greatest commandment, is allowing the one of the worst suicide crises to develop.
These fools complain when pro-LGBT+ activists say anything even slightly out of line but then go out putting up posters to harass and intimidate. Assuming the posters are being placed in mailboxes, the nuisances behind these rags are committing a federal offense. They are, literally, committing the same crimes as terrorist Man Haron Monis before his attack on Martin Place.
None of these points address the simple fact that a religious definition of marriage shouldn’t even exist in Australia because we are a secular nation, not a Christian one.
